Several folks asked to see this rig in action. Here I am making contact with KI6O, Tom.Thanks Tom!

I am in Los Gatos about 70 miles away from the Mt. Diablo repeater (W6CX) and Tom was about 80 miles away from the repeater in Sacramento (which is about 120 miles from Los Gatos). Mt. Diablo is at about 3800 feet and the repeater is at about 2400 feet. I was operating at 5 Watts.

I also use the Vespa for a complete HF QRP station as well. Check it out in another of my videos.

Original posting:

My Vespa scooter with a wide range receive, dual band 50W 2m - 70cm Yaesu FTM-10R.

The FTM-10R is installed in the glove box with a DC line noise filter. It does indeed fit like a glove.

The FTM-10R control head can be mounted or extended for use as PTT mic (Bluetooth headset may also be used). Also nice for listening to FM broadcast stations. Speakers in main chassis and in control head deliver very nice audio.

A base and center loaded 29" dual band 146/446 Maldol EX-107RB antenna mounted on the "crash bar." 146MHz 2.6dBi 1/2 wave and 446MHz 4.9dBi 5/8 wave x 2.

In addition to the FTM-10R, I bring along a Yaesu FT-817nd, mini Buddy Pole, and 25W foldable solar array (all in the rear carrier) for QRP on 160-10 meters HF, 6 meters, 2 meters, and 70cm.

  • Nice Scoot and good radio! 73's 2e1dxy

  • Very nice installation, I have a similar set up on my bike for APRS.

    Very cool VID.

  • I have been a Ham since April 2001. I wanted to do this ever since I got my Vespa GTS 300 4 1/2 months ago.

  • I'm also a Ham since April 2001. Since I bought a Vespa GTS 300 4 1/2 months ago I always wanted to do this.

  • you may want to replace that generator with a honda one.

it'll be quieter and better for the radio then the vespa one.

  • we had cb's on our bicycles in the eighties used to borrow ! batteries from roadwork signs no phones for the masses in those days or internet god i'm old

  • Very nice mobile,I run a 1969 Lambretta scooter, too busy hanging on to have a rig on it........Top Video..............73's DAVE (M0OGY) North Lincolnshire ,UK.

  • What I would do, is that I would run some kind of cable, and mount the PTT button on the handle bars. And then some how, run the cable to an ear peice, so it won't be too hard taking the rig off to transmit. Otherwise, great setup!
