Desmond has a history of food-related aggression, resource guarding, food bowl guarding. His threshold was so low, that we had to find a different way to work sub-threshold. I taught him a "go to your bed" cue using 100% shaping. This cue became reinforcing as it was 100% positively taught. I then taught "wait" using a toy, then an empty bowl, then a bowl with a crumbly (not high value) treat, then with a few bits of kibble, then finally his raw diet.
