Fishtank 21.1.09 ASSISTANCE PLEASE!

PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION:

Hey all, since its the new year i've decided to have a fish update :)
But this time i really need help with two things:
Firstly:
For ages and ages now, my plants (live) Have been covered in a coat of black...horribleness. And to be honest, it ain't the nicest thing to look at.
I've had countless amounts of plecos and algae eaters, but they don't seem to eat it, they just...die. Any help??
Secondly:
I heard if you put slate in a tank, it will encourage angel fish to breed? True of false? Well anyways, I put slate in, could someone tell me if its been positioned right?
I'm not bothered if they don't breed, i was just curious.
Also, could anyone possibly identify the gender of these angel fish? Thanks again :)

yes this is true but there is a thing called balck water extract that will make them breed over night also make sure your tank is clean first and all so one more thing make sure that the fish are a pair i have been breeding angle fish for 35 years now and it is fun once you know how

anything thats flat i guess, flat and smooth, angel fish in the wild breed and broad leaved plants, like plants with nice wide leaves, they are used to spawning on vertically placed positions or diagonallly placed objects(from about id say 40 degrees-90 degrees angle, or get a brazilian sword pland) but the black stuff is probably black beard algae, and best way to get rid of that is to use reverse osmosis or demineralised water/ cut down on trace elements or fertiliser (phospate and nitrate )
