The Best of Youth When Matteo was Nicola

It tracks two brothers, representing Italy's two sides, from the 1960s through the 2000s. Here Matteo meets a beautiful photographer in Sicily. If you like Northern Exposure, you will probably appreciate Best of Youth. Great, dense movie. Subtitles.

I loved this movie, but never once did I understand why he sayed that he's name was Nicola, at first I thought he was undercover but it's not the reason. Does anybody know why?

My guess is that he was ashamed of his identity. He not only lied about his name, but also his profession. He said he was an engineer which is more along the lines of what he was supposed to become and what Nicolo did become. He was the more gifted, but had a temperament which wouldn't allow him to bend at all - leading to the exam failure.

He also had a history of keeping people and women at a distance. He reached out to Georgia, but that ended badly with her arrest at which point he dropped out completely from his former life and joined the police. When she reappears in his life and demands attention, he kills himself.

Anyway, that's my best guess.

@ztruffles i go with that one but "ashamed", i dont think it s the proper word; still i dont come with anything better. i remember a comment inside the movie that fits him well and sum him up, i think it's something like that "it was like he was hurt by everthing". no room for ultra sensitive guy like him in that world. and that s a shame.

basically a society's misfit. A gifted guy not understood by all the other surrounding him). If you look for a reason of his suicide, you must watch carefully the beginning, when he reads a poetry to Giorgia in the library. His life had no reasons worth living for, and his last option left is Mirella. She does not pick the call, and he decides to kill himself. One of the best characters I have ever seen in a movie. Awesome

Good interpretation, man. Another important thing to me is that he picks his brother's name because that's he what he really wanted to be. and he envies his brother because of that probably.

In my opinion, he decided to join the police in order to give a sense to his life. Let's put it this way, it was to him the only way to change all the atrocities in the living, at least, the only good way to do something useful (you see that even during the exam when leaves the room, he's

Retorico, melenso all'inverosimile, democristiano nell'estetica dei sentimenti.

Unico picco: personaggio e interpretazione di Alessio Boni. Il fratello ( Lo Cascio) è un'apologia della mediocrità: intelligente ma non troppo, ribelle ma rassicurante, libero fino alle (spazio vuoto) conseguenze.
