Collecting Eggs for Incubation. Don't clean eggs that are to be incubated. The mama hen lays the egg with a protective coating that keeps the egg from taking in germs. Don't incubate excessively dirty eggs. If there is a little bit of dirt, just wipe it off.

  • @countrytom72 I figured I would get a comment like this eventually so I wanted to kindly share why I ended up marking with ink. I used to mark in pencil or crayon and the problem with both is the mark won't last 3 weeks in a humid incubator. Additionally, I discovered through candling that pencil sometimes scratches the egg. I did a side by side experimental hatch with pencil vs marker. Same chickens. Same incubator and the marker eggs had higher hatch rates. Ink has never affected my hatches.

  • Writing on eggs with a permament marker is a big NO NO it penetrates the shell and membrane
