Saw all these performances, she was fantastic. Heather Begg sings the mother here. She sang these performances with the promise that she would get Turandot but they went to Gwyneth Jones in the new production. Tinsley should have sang more at the Royal Opera House but you could say that about many great British singers.

@southseastroker OH, I do so agree with you. Tinsley ,Vaughan, Elisabeth Fretwell all wonerful singers in their day.

Pauline Tinsley- certainly a great artist who deserved accolades from this country as did Elizabeth Vaughan- @southseastroker is right. At least Elizabeth received her honorary doctorate from Wales university, but both should have been given a DBE as they gave outstanding service to opera worldwide and brought great kudos to the UK. In defense of Kiri she still sings occasionally and has preserved that voice beautifully - don't be too hard on her southseastroker.

I remember the broadcast on the tele and Pauline wiped the floor with placido.I remember he was going various colours straining in every way,she really made him work hard just to keep up with her . He must have wondered where on earth did she come from.

Thanks I saw Pauline on Thursday, she is pretty good apart from pain in her legs. She still can relate many stories about her performances and other artists. She is really great and should have been Dame Pauline years ago but of course she is forgotten by the majority. She sang recently in Church for a neighbour's funeral at the age of 83 She is an amazing woman!

I used to see Pauline perform at WNO in the New Theatre Cardiff in the 70s and early 80s . She was a fab Turandot.

A truly thrilling singer! I saw her as Lady Macbeth twice.Wonderful!

Does anyone know how she maintained her voice so magnificently even into her late 60's? I just listened to her sing Rossini's Cat Duet with Eliazbeth Vaughan and was amazed at her still wonderful vocal sound!

I first discovered Pauline in Ernani at Sadler's Wells with Donald Smith and from then onward I was a devoted fan. Unfortunately I did not travel around enough to see many of her performances but I saw: Mary Stuart, several times, Countess in Marriage of Figaro, Abigaile (Nabucco definitive), Turandot (Definitive) Lady Macbeth (definitive) Gioconda, Kostelnicka many times definitive, Cavalleria Rusticana, Elektra (definitive). She is a lovely non assuming lady
Thank you - what a great artist Pauline is. I have many treasure memories and I well recall watching this Cav on the TV broadcast, She and Domingo were electrifying
