It seemed you just happened to notice it sounded like Neil Young and thought to mention it. I just thought it was cool that you did, since I don't see a lot of guitar videos where people talk about getting a Neil Young sound but he's one of my favourites.

Yeah, I dunno if the BLT is optimal for neil young though. He uses a spring reverb that's built into his amp (I think, it might be done after it's recorded).

if you turn the direct all the way down on the chili dog, is the bass tone from the octave 1 (or octave 2) clear by itself?

It's kinda dull, but basses are too sometimes lol. also as i demonstrated they get funky down low.
