I sat in that blue plastic chair for what seemed to be hours. All the company dancers and I were waiting outside the grand dance studio, bearing our results. The New York Ballet was putting on the production Swan Lake.
Ever since I was a little girl, I dreamed of being swan lake, dancing with my partner infront of millions of people. I wanted to be the star. But, I had been auditioning for producions since I graduated from highschool and have only landed a few small roles as background dancers. In 2006 I auditioned for the Wizard Of Oz. I was one of the munchkins. That same year, 2006, I auditioned for a winter production, The Nutcracker. I was a sugar plum fairy. But, this time I felt something different. Like I had a chance at being the star. I had been in the back all my life and I wanted to shine this time... I was going to shine.
The big grand doors leading to the ballet studio opened, and a man with grey hair, probably in his fifties, walked out and stood infront of us with a clipboard in his hand. He adjusted his glasses and began his speech.
"Good evening!"
We all responded the same. He continued. "As you all know, here at the New York Ballet, we take dance seriously. So, when choosing from the lovely lot of you, we chose the most talented, inspired, and beautiful dancers that posses passion for dance. Some of you who will not be chosen, must know that we still value your technique and passion, but we find that you have more growing room to do." As he finished up he said his good luck wishes and took the paper from the clipboard and nailed it to the bullitin board beside my chair. He then left.
I watched and waited as all the men and women fought over front row to view the paper. I waited. After 1/3 of them left happy and calling their folks telling them the good news. I waited. Some of the dancers left in tears and destrot of not making the production list. I waited. Finalliy as everyone was leaving I stood up and made my way to the white sheet of paper with cursive writing all over. I closed my eyes and wispered. "I'm going to shine." I opened my eyes and and beared the bad news. My eyes filled with tears.
~~~Later that night at Shelby's appartment.
Justin held me tight in his arms, telling me the good points in my career. I just layed there in his arms, spraule out on the couch.
Justin kissed my forhead, laying his chin on my head after. "Baby, have you ever thought that what happens, happens for a reason?"
I layed there silent then looked up into his deep chocolate brown eyes and bit my lip. "What do you mean?"
Justin smiled and held me closer. "God has already planned our life out for us. He's already binned the cover together seeling our story inside. You're only 20 years old. Your barely half way through your book. I think that all these little roles and no roles are making you a stronger person and a stronger dancer." He smiled.
I couldn't help but smile. Justin's view on things always made me smile. That's why we're getting married in the spring. In his view, he's my happy ever after ending. The one who makes me laugh, when I want to cry, he makes me smile, when I want to frown. He makes me happy. I drew circles on his chest with my finger. "So your saying I give it another try?" He nodded. "Alright, for you baby! I'll give it another try."
His smile faded. "Shelby, I don't want you to do this for me. I want you to do it for you!"
"But--" He cut me off.
"It's your life do what you want to do, the world is watching you. Every day the choices you make. Say what you are and who." He kissed my forhead intently. I smiled. "I love you."
~~~3 months later at the New York theatre Ballet.
"Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for watching our production of The Beauty and The Beast." The audience claps. "I'd now like to further introduce you to our leading roles." Two ladies walked out holding two bouquets of roses. "Dancing the role of the beast is Antario Degaree'!" Everyone clapped as Antario walked out taking a bow and accepting the bouquet. The announcer continued. "Lastly is our women leading role as Bell, please give it up for Shelby Antonette!" Every rose to their feet in a standing ovation for Shelby.
Shelby walked out and accepted her bouquet of roses and curtseyed. When she saw everyone giving her a standing ovation, tears flooded her eyes. The announcer handed Shelby the mike to give a speech. Behing in tears Shelby could only say what came to her mind first. "I'd like to thank my soon to be husband and best friend, Justin, for pushing me though the bad times and extending the good times! I'd also like to say something to him." She cleared her throat. "Justin, I've got a couple dents in my fender, got a couple rips in my jeans, I try to fit the pieces together but perfection is my enemy. And on my own I'm so clumsy, but on your shoulders I can see. That I'm free to be me!"
