The first psalm (Psalm 103, Septuagint numbering) of the Vechernya ("evening service, Vespers) in the Ipatiev Monastery Chant, with harmonisation by Archimandrite Matfei Mormil, the grand old man of modern Russian Orthodox chant. Mr Gorbik, the director of this choir, is one of his students. This is accompanied by icons of the New Martyrs of Russia. The final image is particularly powerful. It is a new pattern of icon of the Mother of God called "Stand for Christ with the Martyr's Cross". It has become popular in the homeland over the last ten years.

  • I am starting my Elementary Russian courses in Fall, hopefully I will be able to understand better then. Pray for me, a sinner!

  • @HistoryLubber Take your time... any language is a thought-world unto itself... it's why translation is such a chore. Speak to native speakers, listen to the music, watch our movies, and read our books. Start with cartoons like Umka the White Bear (it's on YouTube)... there's a version with English subtitles (there's other cartoons with subtitles on the page, as well). Don't laugh at this method... it works!

    May God bless...

  • Where, oh where can a wretch like me learn of Orthodoxy? Oh G*d how I have craved to at least have a connection to a faith that I know is the original faith. CAN ANYBODY HEAR ME?

  • @TheDanbristol Firstly, Orthodoxy isn't something that one LEARNS from a book... it has to be experienced. Google "Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia", go to the website, look up a parish. You can only know us if you worship with us. Orthodoxy isn't something that one picks up easily... it takes patience. Do avoid the "Orthodox Church in America" and "Antiochian Orthodox Church"... they're full of former Anglicans posing as Orthodox (BLEECH)... be good... may God bless.

  • Who's composition is this? It sounds like the Patriarchal Choir, but who wrote the music?

  • Technically, it is the Chant (napeva) of the Ipatiev Monastery as harmonised by Archimandrite Matfei Mormil (the former director of the Choir of the Moscow Theological Academy). The choir is led by Vladimir Gorbik, one of Fr Matfei's pupils. The choir is that of the Moscow podvrie of the Sergievskaya Svyataya Troitsa Lavra in Sergiev Posad.

  • @kennsie8 because he is Jewish

  • @27272745 Actually you are so wrong about Tsar Martyr Nicholas. He was annointed, pious, faithful and there is no turth to your comment that he was responsible for the murders of millions. Now the Communists killed 50-60 million...

  • @Vostorgina01 Sadly, most if not all of our parishioners at St. Maximus the Confessor Orthodox Church are American, but our priest studied a good bit all over Russia and even taught Russian at the university level for a while, so maybe I can practice with him. I will save "Umka and the White Bear" to my list to get some practice in later on. Thank you very much! :)

  • I'm sorry chaps. The last Tsar was a tyrant like his predecessors. They killed millions (as did the stalinists) They are not Saints.

Now we see the politcs of religion rearing it's ugly head and condeming all who do not agree.

Sit back and enjoy the beauty of the music and the singing. I don't understand the language but I do understand the music.
