The President and CEO of the Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson, Kansas, Chris Orwoll, gives visitors a behind-the-scenes look at some treasures from Gus Grissom's Liberty Bell 7 spacecraft.

The Cosmosphere was instrumental in the recovery and restoration of Liberty Bell 7 from the bottom of the Pacific; it is on display at the museum and is the only flown U.S. manned capsule NOT owned by the Smithsonian.

  • Oh, me too, it was something else. I had forgotten about Grissom although I read "The Right Stuff" quite awhile back. Thanks for watching!

  • THAT...was cool.

  • amazing..

  • Gus was suspected of panicking and blowing the hatch, which caused the capsule to sink. When it was recovered the man who disarmed the remaining explosive bolts 'accidently' found the onboard film camera magazine open to the light.(Destroying the film) This showed much respect to a man who was a hero who was sadly later killed in the Apollo 1 fire.

Much was learned from Lib 7 and its sinking and future flights were that little bit safer for it.

  • Wonder how much guses doller would bring at a auction.

  • Yea Future Astronaut Training Program WOOT Hutchinson, Kansas

  • Thanks for posting this. I didn't know they recovered all that stuff in such good condition. I saw the tv special on Discovery many years ago but that was early days. This is a great follow up!

  • Awesome! I'm bummed that I missed this part of the tour!
