Heading to Monterey this weekend for a Stanford Class -- The Ocean as Laboratory: The Hopkins Marine Station, one year younger than Stanford, has had a major impact on marine biology in America. The Station has also had a large influence on the establishment of Monterey Bay as a major center of oceanographic research. This one-day field seminar will provide an in-depth view of this rich history, a tour of the Station and its facilities, and a laboratory experience in which participants will directly view and manipulate the fertilization of sea urchin eggs. Research on these eggs has provided a model for embryology and led to important insights on the fertilization and development of all organisms, from jellyfish to humans. Following the seminar, students will be on their own to enjoy lunch in Monterey and to further explore its rich marine resources, such as the adjacent Monterey Bay Aquarium.
