Part 1 - Is this the life
Film of Cardiacs gig at Surbiton Assembly Rooms 18th April 1985.
Recorded infront of a packed South London home audience with the classic line-up and at a time when they were possibly at the peak of their popularity this video was put together by Nick Elborough and Mark Francombe as a college project with the able assistance of the Alphabet Business Concern.

Notes from the time:
Filmed on two u-matic cameras. One static on tripod by mixing desk in middle back of hall. Second - roving at front of stage and at side of stage. Sound recorded on stereo Nagra. One channel line out from foldback mix on mixer. Two channel through Sennheiser mic at back of hall.

Concert lasted roughly 1 hour 20 mins with encores. Sound synched to pictures. Digital delay used to get two tracks of Nagra in sync and actual picture sync done manually with varispeed controller due to problems with autosync!

The front camera shakes so badly because the sprung dancefloor of the Assembly Rooms was literally bouncing up and down with the pogoing crowd!

  • wish there was more parts,great :)

    saw them reading 85,ahhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • This was a fun gig, because the dance floor was a sprung ballroom floor, and bounced like a fucking trampoline when all the fish in the pond jumped up and down at the same time.

We all lived together in Kingston in those days, band and fish and all.

  • Try to get hold of the original version from 'at the seaside', not the single, it's AWESOME It was only ever released on tape cassette, and the masters have been lost. As far as I know it's VERY rare, because there aren't many about. I have a copy but it's on tape and it's seen some use Hunt round,...it's worth it

  • who is he...he is jim

  • Totally awesome guitar solo from Tim Smith!
