Turtle Laying Eggs

Thelma, a Long-Necked turtle, suffered a seriously damaged shell after being injured in a road accident. Xrays revealed she was due to lay 17 eggs. Sadly she died a few weeks afterwards.

I'll tell you a funny story. My two-year-old daughter loves to watch this video of the turtle laying eggs. So once when we were at the grocery store I was buying some eggs and I opened the carton just to make sure they weren't broken or sticking to the carton. So my daughter said very loudly, "Thelma!" I explained that Mommy's eggs come from a chicken, not a turtle. But my daughter's been conditioned to associate eggs with Thelma the Turtle.

Do you know why? Were they unfertilized or taken by other animals (or humans, for that matter; I hear in some places poaching turtle eggs is a big business)? Anyway, maybe if you wait a while they might hatch yet!
