Yup, typical ham. Open the box, put it all together. Power it up and mess around with the controls. Only THEN do you look at the operator manual. Heh, I've done the same thing every time...

When all else fails, read the instructions! :)

I'd love to get one of these to replace my VX-5R.

Buying a Ht with 6 meters is a complete waste there are few repeaters on 6 ..222-224.995 there more repeaters and on 6 meters u need at least a 1/4 wave antenna and a minimal of 25 watts I have ownws a radio Ht with 5 meters the only contact I ever made I had to find the exact repeater sight and stand down stairs your better off with the kenwood f6a or vx7 r dont waste your money

You can't expect to go very far without repeaters. Even 100 watt stations use repeaters depending on the frequency and other conditions.

You can go around the world on a single watt on short wave.

It depends on where you are. On a mountain with a good antenna you can go for miles and miles. In the city at ground level with a little "rubber duck" of an antenna you may be lucky to get very far at all unless you get a repeater.
