E-trailer for the National Theatre's production of 'Saint Joan'.
The heretic is always better dead. And mortal eyes cannot distinguish the saint from the heretic.
A country girl in her late teens declares her bloody mission to drive the English from France and to crown the reluctant Dauphin as King. With staggering confidence, she takes command of the army and conducts a brutal campaign that leads to Charles VII's coronation. But as one of the first Protestants and nationalists, she threatens the very fabric of feudal society and the Catholic Church across Europe. Within one year she is burnt at the stake.
She is inspired, but diabolically inspired.

It was a wonderful production of 'Saint Joan' at the National Theatre but the trailer just shown gives very little idea of what made it so wonderful.

"Quite so. These two ideas of hers are the same idea at bottom. It goes deep, my lord. It is the protest of the individual soul against the interference of priest or peer between the private man and his God. I should call it Protestantism if I had to find a name for it." - If Shaw wouldnt have become a poet he would have been a great Jesuit, as he is fighting the modern world with her very own weapons. Defending the clerical detractors of the Maidt! Movies should use this play as script.

Dont know the title but it was composed by Jocelyn Pook and the vocal was by Melanie Pappenheim. I imagine this piece was performed by Jocelyn's ensemble

I dragged my very reluctant 13 year old to this last night - she said afterwards that it was 'brilliant'.
Actress: I think that what the NT means by referring to Joan as a 'Protestant' was that she refused to accept the Catholic Church's interpretation of God's will and instead insisted on believing in her own interpretation, which were manifested through the 'voices' that she heard. Maybe the NT would have been more accurate to write 'Protestant' with a small 'p'.
