Le Mans 24 Hours 1969 - La Ronde Infernale Part 2 of 4. The race gets underway.
Jacky Ickx was opposed to the traditional Le Mans start which he considered to be dangerous, he slowly walked across the track to his machine, instead of running. He locked the safety belt carefully and thus was the last to start the race, chasing the field. In lap one, a tragic event proved that Ickx was right: private driver John Woolfe had a fatal accident in his new and powerful 917 and fellow countryman Willy Mairesse had an accident which ended his career. Neither of them had taken time to belt himself in.

  • Great footage, but it seems bizarre that no mention is made of the fact that John Woolfe sadly lost his life in the 1st lap crash. This tragic accident caused the abandonment of the traditional 'LeMans start' from 1970, as Woolfe fatal accident has been blamed on him not having time to fasten his racing harness, and his failure to latch the door properly.

  • did you read the full description for the vid?

  • thanks a lot. do you have the '70 and '71 races?

  • unfortunately no.

  • Jacky Ickx rullz for his rational protest to start the race in a more safer way.

His daughter Vanina still races at Le Mans right?

  • @Jansauber1 you forgot oldsmobile there was a racer with a w43 hemi 455 rocket olds

  • After a crash like that they don't stop?

  • Haha Ickx. Genius. Makes me proud to be Belgian

  • very nice video, the golden age of sports car. maybe the best race ever: Ferrari, Porsche, FOrd...sadness for Woolfe. Somewhere i red that i didn't fast his seatbelt..but he was very unlucky because after a very bad crash the Ferrari of Amon hit him at full speed..

  • at 5:40, "serves you right.. don't get in the way" haha

  • Woolfe DIED in his 917's explosion.....

    Censorship?

    Denial?

    J.C.

  • He won, idiot. He realized it would be pointless to waste his energy running all the way to his car and to purposely throw aside his own safety by not putting on his seat belt just to save a few seconds in a 24 hour race.
