For the past three years, the Mianus Chapter of Trout Unlimited has been working with the city of Stamford, the Friends of Mianus River Park and others to restore a section of the Mianus River which had been heavily degraded due to erosion and overuse.
In the initial stages of the project, the river bank was hardened with boulders to prevent further erosion and stone vanes were built to divert the main force of the current to the center of the stream.
The final phases of the project included building a stone walkway out to the river and then fencing off the downstream section and planting it with native vegetation to prevent further erosion.
This pilot project was designed to build a collaborative effort between Trout Unlimited, the city and Friends of Mianus River Park and begin building awareness among park users of the importance of restoring and protecting the fragile river habitat in the 200 acre park.
In the coming years, future projects are being planned to preserve and protect other stretches of stream while enhancing the recreational use of the park for all.
