  • never heard of chaga. some kind of tinder fungus or something?

  • @ZZOTH Inonotus obliquus is the Latin term. It is 'true tinder shroom", opposed to "false tinder shroom" or horse's hoof mushroom. Grows on birches mostly, sometimes beech. Colder, higher elevation. In my experience, usually where the ground is moist, closer to river it's more ubiquitous.

  • It's easier with the chaga on the thumb side, not on top. You won't need to worry that you'll get a burn on your thumb because the chaga burns very very slowly. Better yet, put the chaga down and scrape the firesteel with the rock. The firesteel can be the plate instead of the striker. Practice at night so you know where sparks usually go. It's hard to see sparks by day. And, thanks for the video, in spite of my kibbitzing! :)

  • you find that Chaga in NH?

  • Whether it bursts into flames or not at least you're out there giving it a go in real time.

  • Good demo - I wish we had chaga around here too! Tim

  • Sometimes that happens i enjoyed the video just as well. Peace my friend.
