After the poor reception of his first symphony by some unkind critics, Rachmaninov sunk into a deep depression for some years, composing little and smiling even less during this time. Only when his 2nd piano concerto was well-received did he begin smiling again. The silly part is, that today his first symphony is a highly acclaimed work, up there with the other greats! Known and loved by many.

Different from 1-3 maybe but each is amazing in its own right. Rather like the difference between symphony 3 and Nos 1+2. I have listened to the 4th piano concerto a few times recently and it has grown on me markedly as I have got to know it. I love it.

There are pictures of him with a light smile on his face.
He seemed like a somewhat reserved character. I recognize his type of smile as the smile of a reserved personality. Very intelligent, lots going on in the head, but not necessarily ready to say much.

@kristoferfir I see nothing, I hear everything.

Rachmaninov's work is quite characteristic, piano is unmistakable as much as Chopin's notes are. This concerto however doesn't sound as much as him, nevertheless is equally great.
Rachmaninoff has one of those faces that you could believe never smiled.

I would never compare this work to the other 3 concertos. It's just a horse of a different color. Genius, not on a different page, but in a different book.
