Watch an interview with Stephen J. Dante, MD, a neurosurgeon at Penn Medicine.
"One of the things that brought me to neurosurgery was the desire to treat very challenging problems with patients. The patients I see at my practice primarily have spinal disorders. They can have problems that are congenital or developmental, or things that occur later in life such as arthritic disease and disc problems. I also have a particular interest in tumors of the spine and some of my patients require surgery or radiosurgery treatment for spinal tumors."
"The nervous system is quite complex and sometimes the treatment options are very elaborate and I think that this challenge is something that made me gravitate toward the field. This is why I chose to return to Penn. Penn Medicine is focused on treating patient's problems, even the most complex situations, with cutting-edge, state-of-the-art treatments that aren't found in many circumstances."
"One of the biggest advantages to practicing in the Penn Medicine system is the ability to collaborate with other specialties and find that I have a confidence in the practitioners who are providing top-level care in these other fields."
"I like to think that I try to deliver personalized and thoughtful care to my patients. Patients have very unique settings with their family situations and job requirements and I believe that developing a treatment plan that's particular for a certain patient with all of his or her circumstances is essential."
"One of the most memorable patients I treated was a 17-year-old girl who came in with a sudden loss of consciousness. She was found to have a hemorrhage in the brain and after surgical treatment we were able to evacuate this hemorrhage and correct the problem that led to the bleeding. I still get Christmas cards and birth announcements from this woman as her family continues to grow."
"I'm Dr. Stephen Dante and I'm a neurosurgeon at Penn Medicine."
