Amensal - an interactive street level installation by cicada

Amensal is a public interactive installation work which explores the delicate balancing act that unfolds when nature ventures into the city.

To explore this territory, lichens were chosen as the central players in the work. Each lichen is a symbiotic relationship between two species.

The giant organism is damaged by the presence of pedestrians, it is literally eaten away by their shadows. The growth rate of the organism is determined by the sound pressure levels around the work. When a car spins its wheels or a motorcycle revs it's engine the organism recoils from the noise.
