Footage from a hike I went on this summer in Rondane national park in central Norway. We went from our cabin along lake Musvolltjønn via Musvollseter shieling to lake Atna and then back through the woods to a former shieling called Tinasæter (now used just as a cabin), then back to the cabin along the side of the hill, out of the forest. Some fantastic views of the Rondane massif. The video also shows some of the natural diversity found in the area; a lot of different biotopes.

  • @1488bill As for my grandfather, I'm not sure how lucky he considered himself, it was a hard life. The winters can be very hard in this part of the country. (And most of the rest of it, to be honest. :-) But he had his farm and kept it and passed it on to his children, so in that respect he was definitely fortunate. Thank you for the compliments on the videos, I really appreciate it. I've got some coming up with folk music, actually. :-)

  • @1488bill You've got the wild reindeer mixed up with the tame ones. In Sami country there are lots of reindeer, yes, but they are tame. The cattle of the north. :-) The ones in Rondane are the wild reindeer, they don't migrate further north than Tromsø. Rondane is home to large numbers of these animals, so there are a lot of restrictions on use of the area, to protect the reindeer, especially during mating and birthing season.

  • Spectacular indeed....enchanting forest. I thought the reindeer were up farther north where the Laplanders, the Sami people inhabit?

Your Great Grandfather was so fortunate and blessed to live in such a beautiful part of central Norway.

I simply love these videos. The rustic ambiance of the cabins is reminiscent of some beautiful folk music I enjoy played on the hardingfele.
