This is Karl Rove's trademark strategy.

If your candidate was a coward who hid in the Texas Air Guard during Viet Nam, accuse the opposition, who actually went to Viet Nam and got shot at, of cowardice.

If your party is suppressing the opposition vote and hacking the electoral network and flipping votes, accuse the opposition of trying to steal elections.

If your party has no plan, accuse the opposition of having a really bad plan.

It's well known that the general public is intellectually lazy, and won't bother to fact check information they've received from mainstream media because they've been taught to trust that the media has done the fact checking for them. Rove advises clients to publicly accuse opponents of the very thing they, themselves, would like the public to forget about them-- over & over & over, again-- until they've overwritten the public's true memories and replace them with, new, false information.
