This video contains some features I and eye candy I use on a regular basis and is a variation of my Green Matrix Theme. Some of these features are not 'out of the box' for Ubuntu 11.04 (such as Emerald and xwinwrap) but they can be installed and fully functional as shown in the video. None of the features used have been created by me as I am a consumer so all the credit goes to the developers. Here are the features:

xwinwrap (Shantz): XWinWrap is a small utility written a loooong time ago that allowed you to stick most of the apps to your desktop background. What this meant was you could use an animated screensaver (like glmatrix, electric sheep, etc) or even a movie, and use it as your wallpaper.

Screenlets (Gnome): Learn more about the screenlets and find out what they are, what they do and why they are possibly the best open-source widget framework out there!

AWN: (AWN/Awn) is a dock-like navigation bar for the linux desktop that positions itself at the bottom of the screen. It can be used to keep track of open windows and behaves like a normal window list.

Compiz: Compiz is a compositing manager, which means that it enhances the overall user interaction by adding fancy effects to your windows, from drop shadows to awesome desktop effects like the Desktop Cube or the Expo view.

Emerald: Emerald allows for all sorts of different configurations and layouts of buttons, look, title bars and frames. Emerald Window Decorator is completely independent of any desktop, and you specify your own themes to use for it. The Decoration plugin must be enabled in order for Emerald Window Decorator to function. Emerald is not available in 11.04 using standard repositories. You must manually install.

  • I am using classic. I disable the main gnome-panel (by renaming it) in /usr/bin/gnome-panel to /usr/bin/gnome-panel.original but not before I install and configure AWN. AWN has a setting (called Intellihide) that will hide the AWN panel.
