Also, I was a qualified referee, not a fat bloke in jogging bottoms running around the centre circle trying to control the game, so to say all referees are 'doing their club mates a favour' is also rubbish.

What a load of absolute rubbish! I refereed kids football for many years and every Sunday morning I'd receive a tirade of abuse from parents. What got me was, I always received good marks from the managers/coaches, so the parents were worse.
