He explains that in a different interview, those men on the bench are thieves.
Notice how they tell Ezio that Leonardo said the flying machine is ready.

Actually, they more than realized what he did... They are thieves, helping Ezio on his missions
Just as in AC1, the people sitting on benches appeared blue in eagle vision, allthough even if you didn't know them at all
You'll see in the updated version of the E3 demo, that one of the guys sitting there actually holds the guard back so he won't fall over xD

They are allies, he were talking to them about the flying machine when the guy interrupted and Ezio knows they'll get rid of the body.
