Nah, I agree. I think beck's sense of "humor" extends to only lampooning things outside of himself. True comedy starts with lampooning one's self. I remember watching Leno I think it was with Beck. Beck was talking about "happenings" (the 60s spontaneous art "moments"), then reached out and halved Leno's tie with scissors. Then Leno did it back to him. Beck found it unfunny and mumbled something about "but my tie is retro". Leno's not funny mind you, but Beck is humorless.

Yeah, I've read the transcript too and, in it, Nardwuar seems almost uncharacteristically confrontational. It's like Nardwuar views Beck as a poseur and holds him responsible for the cheesy record biz promotion that surrounded him at the time.

Fair enough, but I really don't blame Beck for hanging up on him.

I like them both, btw.

Beck is an asshole, period. It's not really a secret. Wayne Coyne, being the nonsensical no-nonsense workhorse that he is, toured with Beck and made his disgust with Beck's pompousness well-known.

Mind you, I worship his music and own practically everything he's released. But his ego is ridiculous.

I feel this is a misrepresentation of what occurred in the full interview. You can read a full transcription on Nardwuar's website. To me its an abnormal interview because Nardwuar usually so polite, even when his interviewees are being tools (i.e. Transplants, Busta Rhymes etc), but on this he seems determined to make Beck come across like an asshole because college radio in Canada wasn't getting the chance to play any his records before he signed to Geffen. I like Nardwuar but this was mean.

@dipchasm because, in some point, he is also an artist. he doesnt fulfill the opposing part of the lazy and boring media, he is a totally unique character. someone, who brings out unknown sides about artists, who obviously cares a lot about music and its background, and whose research is just phenomenal, you really LEARN sth during these interviews. this, and him almost being a part of popculture already, makes his work so incredibly valuable to a lot of people. he's simply very good.

Not trolling here, but I've never really understood the appeal of Nardwuar. To me, he comes across as simpering and inane. I will give him the fact that he does good research but above that, I don't see why he's got so many fans.
