Commonly Used Islamic Words and Phrases
To better understand Islam it is necessary to know the meaning of certain key words and phrases used by Muslims in everyday conversation. Most of them are in the Arabic language, and there is often no equivalent in English or in other tongues.
Specifically, here are some mentioned in the video:
Bismillahir Rahmani Raheem
This is a phrase from the Qur'an that is recited before reading the Qur'an.
This phrase is also recited before doing any daily activity. The meaning of it is: "In the name of God, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful."
Salallahu 'Alayhi Wa Salaam (said after 'Muhammad' or 'The Prophet')
When the name of Prophet Muhammad is mentioned or written, a Muslim is to respect him and invoke this statement of peace upon him. The meaning of it is: "May the blessings and the peace of Allah be upon him (Muhammad)".
Subhan-Allah
This is an expression that Muslims use when surprised or as a general statement. The meaning of this expression is: "Glory be to God."
Mashaa-Allah
This is an expression that Muslims say whenever they are excited and surprised. When they wish to express their happiness, they use such an expression. The meaning of "Ma sha' Allah" is: "Whatever God wants." or "Whatever God wants to give, He gives." This means that whenever God gives something good to someone, blesses him, or honors him, a Muslim says this statement of "Ma Sha' Allah."
Inna A'taynaa kal kawthar
This is the first ayah (verse) of the 108th Sura (divison of the Qur'an, sometimes translated as a chapter) of the Qur'an. It's meaning is "Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muhammad], al-Kawthar." Al-Kawthar refers to a river or a spring in Paradise.
