Belgium-born Lopez-Ochoa took as a source of inspiration for her piece the Renaissance paintings and sculptures of Michelangelo. The frozen moment depicted in a "tableau vivant" has always been fascinating to the choreographer. On the contrary, she never really understood the beauty of still life, onto which bowls of fruit are painted. Annabelle decided to put life and movement to the most biblical fruit that is usually encountered on still lifes and liturgical paintings: the apple.

"Still Alive", or STILL@LIFE, is the fantasy of the choreographer as to what would happen if one of those religious paintings would come to life. The choreographer is using the development of the artist Michelangelo as a red thread for the structure of her piece, following the start of his career as a sculptor and ending with his painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, which occurs as an explosion of colors.

STILL@LIFE was premiered by BalletX in the Summer of 2008, and was Annabelle's choreographic debut in North America. This ballet has been supported by Pew Center for Arts & Heritage through Dance Advance.

Costume design: Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and Martha Chamberlain. Lighting Design: Drew Billiau.
This recording was made in November 2010, at the BalletX Fall Series at The Wilma Theater. Video and edit: Alexander Iziliaev.
