They changed it to Sorcerer's Stone with the permission of the author simply because it rolls off the tongue better. Not to mention, as a movie primarily intended for children, the kids can comprehend the word "sorcerer" a lot easier than philosopher. American's can spell, you pricks, and we know what philosophers are. I'm sick of people throwing Americans in the "ignorant" category. There are definitely stupid people in America, I'm not denying it, but not all of us are stupid. Respect...
