In January 2010, South Gloucestershire Council removed two silver birches in Thornbury High Street, claiming that the roots were damaging the pavement and causing pedestrians to trip [although there is little evidence to support this claim].

During the time that the trees were deemed to have caused the pavement to be dangerous, there were never any warning signs displayed nearby. So I doubt the council's sincerity in claiming to care that much about pedestrians.

If they really did care so much, then they would surely do something about Church Road, if only to display warning notices to vehicles, and advice signs to pedestrians to use alternative routes, as far as possible.

During the video you will hear (1) voices of schoolchildren using a hard surface footpath (immediately behind me), linking Church Road to Gloucester Road, and (2) the clank of a kissing gate which is at the start of a grassed footpath (slightly further back) linking both roads via Chantry Field. These are both designated footpaths, and preferible routes for pedestrians.

The filming took place on 19 October 2009 between 3.33pm and 3.45pm, when children are leaving mainly from Castle School (with some late leavers from St Mary's Primary School). The cuts in the film removed just enough non-activity footage to reduce the time of the video enough to meet YouTube's stipulations. The times shown are accurate.
