I used to go there back in the 1960s. Lots of people hanging out. Guys would jump in and then get sucked out a few seconds later. No screen covering the hole back then. Never had the courage to do it myself.
@twgreenbus : Do you know when or what the real reason was behind capping it? There are other water temples that are part of the Hetch hetchy system (my grandfather worked on the dam), I wonder if they have been covered as well?
Used to go there all the time, it used to have a "screen" over it then later a more substantial grate was installed. My dad tell stories of kids "riding" through the flume and out to the lake nearby, some didnt make it obviously!
This is 1 place that has stuck in my head for 40 some yrs. as a kid in the 60s we would ride our bikes here! Before there were gangs!HaHa..To look down the tiled churning turbulent waters was truely looking into a force! To bad we are and our children are so safe and protected in our false security of todays lifestyle!!THEY CAPPED IT ?
thank you for posting this, I visited here with my second grade class in '69
The temple floor used to have a hole you could look down into where i saw rushing water (it was scary, not surprising they've covered it, but i thought that was the main attraction...?)
@kamakalama Me too. I heard of people jumping in. Just looking at it was enough for me. I haven't been there since c1971
