Das antike Scodra wurde im 4. Jahrhundert v. Chr. gegründet und war das städtische Zentrum der illyrischen Labeaten. Hier residierte im 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr. die bekannte illyrische Königin Teuta, früher auch Agron und später auch Genthios.

Auf einem Hügel steil über der Buna zwischen den Flüssen Buna und Drin liegt die Burgruine Rozafa. Ihre Ursprünge gehen auf die vorrömische Zeit der Illyrer zurück. Die Burg hat bis in die Neuzeit die Geschicke der Stadt bestimmt. Ihre Lage erlaubte, wichtige Verkehrswege auf dem Fluss und an Land sowie später die Brücken zu kontrollieren, und bot über Jahrtausende Sicherheit.

In der Antike hatten sich im albanischen Hochland römische Kultur und die Latinität nicht endgültig durchsetzen können, und mit dem Ende der römischen Herrschaft im 5. Jahrhundert nahm die Sprachentwicklung in Albanien dann einen eigenen Weg. Während die illyrischen Bewohner an der Schwelle zum Mittelalter im Küstengebiet der Adria größtenteils romanisiert sind, lassen sich in ihrer Nachbarschaft Bewohner des Inlandes nieder, die ihre illyrische Muttersprache beibehalten haben. Aus dieser Siedlungssymbiose entsteht im nördlichen Albanien das Volkstum der Albaner, in deren kollektiver Ethnizität die Spuren des Illyrertums bewahrt blieben.
