Dahlias provide dazzling blooms in mid- to late summer and are easily grown in full sun and average, evenly moist soil. While grown as perennials in Zones 8-10, gardeners in colder areas of the country treat Dahlias as annuals and may dig and store their tubers for the winter.
Go behind the scenes at White Flower Farm as nursery manager Barb Pierson digs Dahlias from our trial gardens at the end of the season and prepares them for storage. You'll see how to divide the tubers and recognize the "eyes" that will produce new growth the following year, and learn several ways to keep your tubers from drying out over the winter.
Thanks to Gary Junken, videographer at Fine Gardening magazine, for filming this video at our nursery.
