Liz Callaway performs "Goodnight" at Scott Alan's CD Release event for 'Dreaming Wide Awake' on January 7, 2008. CD available on CDbaby.com/scottalan and iTunes.

BACKSTORY: I've said it before, I'll say it again. Having Liz Callaway sing your music is one of the most amazing feelings in the world. It was the moment I defined myself as 'making it.' Here was someone I looked up to. Someone whom got me through so many situations in my life, just by the tone in her voice. And now, here she is, singing one of my songs.

'Goodnight' is the last song in 'Piece,' but it has a very personal story behind it, as many of my songs do. My cousins boyfriend passed away from A.I.D.S. I remember speaking to my cousin on the phone and asking him 'what does one say to someone who knows, in a few minutes, they will be gone ?' His answer ? Nothing !!! You just hold them in your arms, kiss them as many times as you can, and let them go.

I wrote 'Goodnight' for this reason. I wanted to find the perfect words to say to someone, to let them know of all the beautiful things they will once again experience in there life.

Having the most angelic voice sing a song about angels ... well, who could ask for a better pairing ?

  • Dear Scott,

I want to let you know what a comfort this song has been for me the past couple of days.I have been holding my Mothers hand and singing it quietly in her ear as she sleeps her way to heaven. Your gift is so special. From the bottom of my breaking heart, thank you.

    Mark.

  • I always cry when I hear this song. The story behind it is something I wouldn't be able to cope with. Liz captures the emotions so well.

  • so, so amazingly heartfelt and beautiful...

  • she has young voice. so beautiful

  • Scott and Liz are the perfect examples of angels in this world. With the world being so fast right now and people being uncaring, passionless and superficial, these two manage to bring a sense of relief to our lives, making us believe there are more people like us out there. It's just comforting. People like them, should NEVER die.

  • @sophiepd08 thank you for your sweet words. my momma passed the day i wrote that message to Scott. this song will forever be in my songbook of life. the words comfort me in a way that defines my relationship with my mother in her final days. liz is able to be so specific with the story of the song, yet embrace the universality of its humble message. happy thanksgiving.

  • @clarkcny your so kind, keeping near your mother in her time of need. judging by the date you posted this, she's probably gone to that better place now... im sorry and i hope she's resting in peace.

  • OMG STOP TALKNIG START SINGING
