Andy Kershaw (in better times?) presents The Smiths (featuring Morrissey on hearing aid) performing 'Bigmouth Strikes Again' from the album 'The Queen Is Dead' on the BBC's 'Whistle Test' series in 1986. I end up singing this song in the shower whenever I've made a mess of things. I end up singing this song in the shower whenever that's where I am.

  • Who's the 2nd guitarist?

  • Heck, I'd never even thought about that, but Wikipedia suggests Craig Gannon.

  • @RussMoxham Craig Gannon from Aztec Camera

  • @bjaws Oh right, thanks--didn't know the Aztec Camera part. Was never a big fan of them but I can see that he'd have been a good man for this job.

  • how right he was

  • Thanks for uploading this in this quality, my video which I taped live in 1986 I'm not sure where it is. I remember at the time, the music press were ready to slate the band with reservations about their future material, but wow what a song to start with to showcase their new material, they just went up further to another level. Then in December that year they were no more.

  • @SuperMOZ99 me

  • i remember this, and like gunneretic above i taped it and watched it endlessly.

there was quite a bit of controversy in the nme about their "rocked up" sound, but then "there is a light..." came out and everyone shut up.

    great live band.

  • So! This is where Clarkson got the suit jacket and jeans look from.

  • Two guitarists? Why is that?

  • The definitive version of bmsa.

  • Fact: Morrissey wore a fake hearing aid on this show because a hearing impaired girl in the audience was too ashamed to wear one. I have alot more respect for Morrissey now.

  • I saw this, late, in 1988. I bought the vinyl in 1987, but this. Bullet proof in every way. LIke a toilet, like a sink, a ceiling. As good and true as a floor, as real as a light. Like a good coat, like gas from the pump. Salad from the shop, rain on the roof. Water in your tap. Simple pleasures. It will never make life better. That was it. It was straight and fucking true.

  • I remember watching this when it originally appeared on BBC2. (They also played "Vicar In a Tutu" on the same show.) It was the first time I'd heard the song and I recall been astonished that my sky-high expectations for new songs had been EXCEEDED. This was The Smiths at their absolute zenith.

  • Now I know how Joan OF aRC FELT!
