Give me just a minute and hear what I'm explainin'
I admire your intentions, its not that I'm complainin'
I know you like to see donations piled up in stacks
But let's have a chat about the economic facts

If you donate 10 cans that you bought at the store
Then you get 10 cans, to pile on the floor
But the money that was paid, about 10 bucks
Only feeds 10 people and that just sucks.

But on the other hand, if you take that cash
And give it to the Pantry they can use it in a flash
To buy 10 cases - that's a lot of food
It feeds 200 people, do the math dude!

Counting cans is a way to find a winner
But its not the best way to give hungry people dinner
C'mon everybody let me see you raise your hands
If you get what I'm sayin' - it ain't about the cans!

There is another reason why I have this attitude
Do you know what has to happen to these cans of food?
They get hauled, they get sorted, they get checked for expiration
All done by volunteers, it takes lots of dedication

And one more thing its not a pretty story
With donated cans they can't control the inventory
Lots of vegetables, but not enough meat
Nutritionally speaking, thats incomplete.

But when you donate cash then the pantry's in luck
Food comes sorted in cases and delivered on a truck
They order what they need so they get the right mix
So get with the plan all you dudes and chicks.

No donation is bad, that's what I always say
But cash is clearly better, in every single way
Cash feeds more people and is easier to manage
It's the most efficient way to help the disadvantaged.

So when you're feeling generous remember how I called it:
Don't open up your cupboard man, open up your wallet!
You know all the facts and you know what to do
Now you can be a hunger-fighting superhero too!
