84 Monte Carlo SS with 400 SBC

alright so i have a 84 monte carlo had a 305 in it i just blew the bottom end do to the fact it has vortec heads comp 280 670 avenger carb victor intake with custom work almost like airgap hooker headers flowmaster 40. so im building a 400sbc what kinda of power am i looking at if i threw that top from the 305 on the 400? should i go with a bigger cam? this is going to be my first 400 so i dont really know how to get the best performance out of it. i want it for street btw all reply r welcome

@MrVicarious666 not sure on hp at least 400 i would think all that stuff would work good with a 400 have to watch the compression though with a 400 and vortec heads you would need dished pistons. my bottom end is 5.7 rods to help with rpms, scat 9000 crank, and dished hyper pistons just a street strip build. i have the xtreme 274 cam which is pretty good if its not your daily driver cause it will suck gas. it will sound bad ass and loud though like a big block. good luck.

@MrVicarious666 Remember to drill the steamholes that is not present on a 305 or 350 head.

what would you recomend for a cam in astreet car? i had a 454 with a big cam, i dont remember any of the specs but im working on a small block build and im not really sure what cam to go with, its going to be running vortec heads, flat top pistons, a airgap intake and a few other goodies..

it turned out great man thanks i went with the scat crank and 5.7 rods kb pistons. best investment ever cant wait for the snow to melt im going straight to the track. after i put in this new th400 trans

u can call crane cams and tell them ur setup.... n they will tell u the cam that will produce the most hp with ur application. i went with what they told me for my 406 and it sounds like a beast

How is you radiator cooling the 400? Im putting a 400 in my 86 monte ss and was told that I should beef up the rad.

@indyboom yeah it was fun for a week or so had it all laying around. alright so i got the 400sbc i just got it back from the machine shop aj's in jersey got it bored out honed and had new cam bearings put in it looks great went with some keith black hyper pistons and im going to use the same cam, heads and all since the cam is brand new but with new lifters the cranks all clean back in looking good 4 bolt main btw. i drilled the holes myself they came out nice as well

@MrVicarious666 DONT It didnt blow up from heads,. You tried to polish a wore turd that gm should of canned eariler. What ever heads you use drill them for steam ports. Most BBC dont have cams as big as you jammed in that 305
