Volkswagen unveiled its new minivan, the Routan, at the Chicago Auto Show, running Feb. 6-17, just weeks after the premiere of the new Passat CC at the NAIAS 2008. The Routan is a seven-seater that is more than five meters in length. The vehicle comes standard with a 3.8L V6, offering 197 hp and 230 lb. ft. of torque, when combined with the standard six-speed automatic transmission. A 4.0L V6 will be available, rated at 253 hp and 263 lb. ft. of torque. The minivan will be produced in the Volkswagen facility in Windsor, Ontario. The automaker is hoping to increase its volume in North America with models like the Passat CC and the new Routan, both of which are tailored to the U.S. market's requirements.

  • Stop hating on this car you guys. Even though it's not fully German or, to be more reasonable, barely 25% German, it's still a very nice car. America makes great cars and Germany makes great cars and have joined forces to give you the best of both worlds. Besides, this looks a million times better than the Dodge Grand Caravan/Chrysler Town and Country and has much better materals and has a much better driving experiance.

  • if i were to get a minivan, i'd get this one!!!

  • I agree 100%. When I found out the Routan was a Chrysler, I walked out of the dealership betrayed.

    WTF is VW thinking?

  • God knows why VW don't sell the Multivan in the Americas. It's a lot better looking, more functional, actually looks like a VW (especially the interior) and available with a 3.2l VR6.

  • VW can't be proud of the powered tailgate cause its a Chrysler design, in case you don't know the Routan is a T&C with some redesigned panels and interior , its made by Chrysler in its power plant in Canada.

  • I think so too; especially hearing an unconfirmed statement (wikipedia) that after VW's contract with chrysler is up in 2010, VW will be putting their own 3.6L engine in the van versus the Chrysler 3.8 and 4.0... I'm going to confirm with a dealer once they come in, but that news makes me really happy to hear. Though the looks are nothing too original, it's a lot better then the Caravan (ick) my biggest gripe was the crappy powerplant they're putting in it.

  • VW seems darn proud of that auto-closing tailgate! Can't help but think this is a styling disaster -- the worst bits of the Honda Odyssey and a Chrysler Town & Country.

  • Anyone remembering funny commercial Volkswagen with old man and woman on I like to move it song ?
