Guys please stop subduing the snakes by the neck. It can easily cause skull fractures and extreme trauma. Just manipulate the animal with a stick if you so please and take pictures, etc.
it really isn't recomended to pick a venomous snake up by the head. IF yuo are experienced, and that's a big IF, it is actually safer to tail it with a snake hook than to grab it by the head. grabbing a venomous snake by the head should ONLY be done with intentions for milking, which should only be done by laboratory personell, as venom is rarely taken by labs from outside persons.
@samsoninthepit sorry-that's a black-tail. This is a zig-zag pattern; Mohaves have a diamond pattern. Very similar coloration, but different snakes. I see both here in Phoenix and outlying areas.
This is a black-tail rattlesnake (Crotalus molossus), quite common in parts of AZ, NM, and TX. Their venom is considered to be pretty bad even among other rattlesnake despite their overall timid disposition.
Penning snakes is never a recommended technique, especially when a done by a novice or entirely inexperienced individual, as it leaves your hand extremely vulnerable to an accidental bite.
Though I will say thank you for not killing the snake.
@brdesert - WOW ! I found that number of $ 120,000 hard to believe, so I looked around on Google. Found a story of a person with a $ 300,000 rattlesnake bill. What a huge gamble... 1/3 of a million dollars plus your life ... just to show off for a few seconds.
Blacktail for sure!
