Try to imagine the shock of seeing this performance by The Doors when it debuted on Jonathan Winters show in 1967.
The singer appears to go mad when he jumps off the stage into the electric cables at the end of the song.

Besides that, he seems to be bored doing
the song which at the time seemed so new and different to kids like me who bought the 45 after hearing it played once on the radio.

I hadn't seen this since it first aired until recently, and thought I had seen Jim jumping headlong into a net made of rope, struggling like a human fly caught in a big spider web.

My memory wasn't exactly the same as the reel thing, unless there's another similar Doors performance!

"Jim falls at the end of Light My Fire and gets tangled up in the set. Was it for dramatic effect or did Jim lose consciousness momentarily?"
- Musical Stew Daily

Listen closely to hear the nervous reactions of laughter, gasping and pity applause from the genuinely surprised studio audience.

"This is an early Doors performance with Jim singing over the studio instrumental tracks. December 27th 1967 is the broadcast date, however the date of the live filmwork is December 24th, 1967.
The Doors interrupted their performance at Winterland in San Francisco on the 27th to watch themselves on a TV brought onstage during the original broadcast."

  • Densmore talks about the meltdown in his book, Riders on the Storm. Everyone knew Morrison seemed down before the performance, and noticed his lackluster peformance during the song. On the last verse Morrison weirded out and walked into a prop; a fence made of rope, fell and got all tangled. The band never asked Morrison what the hell happened, and Morrison never said, so take your pick. My take is that Morrison had severe mental issues compounded by his drug and booze problems.

  • @mnpd007 Yes, that was my initial impression in 1967 when I saw the debut on TV of this performance. I thought he (Jim Morrison) had gone crazy in front of the cameras. The idea of it being fueled by drugs and/or booze didn't occur to my 14 year old mind.

  • Sorry I've been in deep space for 2 Light years. My Fire is back on for all the Lizard Kings and Queens, princes and poppers. All backlogged comments finally posted. The Lizard Pawn is back!

  • Morrison always sang the songs differently with each performance. He went with the flow of his emotions or feeling at the time. He was happy because of how free he allowed himself to be. He never tolerated the trappings of a conformist society which he felt destroyed the creative spirit within us all.

  • @subarufreak555 if so, youre the kind of "fan" morrison hated.

  • @MrWerewolf1000 then youre the "fan" morrison would have hated.

  • In the book by Greg Shaw "The Doors On The Road", this was a rope prop that Jim had inadvertently had caught himself in..he was pissed off at the fact of being on live TV trying to untangle himself and towards the end of the clip they fade in due to his tirade of cussing..
