Anne didn't get this from Fairport Convention, and Fairport Convention didn't get it from Anne, because they're singing two pretty significantly different versions of the song. You can find precursors of both versions in the Child ballads, though neither is exactly following any of those texts.
Anne may have recorded it later than Fairport but they were inspired by her performances. Sandy loved her performances and was greatly influenced by her. See also Mike Waterson's recording on Topic.
Tam Lin is an old and well-known Scottish ballad. Fairport did not get it from Anne Briggs; this version was recorded in 1971, two years after Liege & Lief.
That said, this is a wonderful version. I wish more people knew of Briggs, as she is one of the greats.
Well well well, Guess where Fairport Covention got Young Tam Lin from?
Not surprising that Sandy Denny wrote a song for Anne.(The Pond and the Stream). This version has a little something suggestive of some of the roots of "The Famous Flower" and Martin Carthy really had to sweat over that song.--- Quite incredible.

One of my favourite Child ballads, magnificent performance by great singer. Buy album on Topic CD without a bad track.

Thank you for this posting. So beautiful and heartfelt, it cuts to the quick. Thank you for this Anne Briggs. It hurts so good.

Like cragsterama said below, it's an old Scottish ballad. Tibet's version does follow Briggs' version for the most part though.

There's a song by David Tibet's Current 93, Tamiln, with almost the same lyrics.
