Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said that the government is considering providing a "Nenasala" centre for every Divisional Secretariat Division this year including the North. He revealed this, participating in the official opening of the 500th "Nenasala" centre.
The President said the education programmes will increase the IT literacy to 60% in 2010. Development is taking place in the Eastern Province with its liberation from the terrorists. Children still live in fear of terrorist guns in certain areas. He was optimistic that this year they will be able to let them share the benefits of the "Nenasala" information centres.
It was opened in Samanthurai. The government's target is to establish 1000 such centres this year. The "Nenasala" programme was launched on a concept of the President, while he was serving as the Prime Minister. The first "Nenasala" was opened by him at the Kirivehera Vihare in 2005, when he was the Prime Minister. The literacy rate of information technology in the country when the programme was launched was five percent. It has now reached more 20 percent. The project has already earned international accolades. Prof. V.K. Samaranayake, who made a priceless contribution for the upliftment of information technology in Sri Lanka was remembered on the occasion. A stamp was issued to mark the opening of the 500th "Nenasala" under the patronage of Deputy Minister S. Sellasamy. The President also granted scholarships to 20 selected students to pursue education at the Swaminathan Computer Scholarship Training Institute in India. Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, President's Secretary Lalith Weeratunga, Defence Secretary Gothabhaya Rajapakse and Acting Chairman of the Information and Communication Technology Institute Prof. P.W. Epasinghe were among those present.
