As any engineering student who has taken a course in thermodynamics knows when you compress a gas, i.e. air, you get both an increase in pressure and temperature. To get the energy back on expanding the gas, in an engine, you must supply the heat of compression back to the expanding gas in order to get back all of the work put into it when compressed. Without the saving of the heat of compression the air motor will only have an efficiency of 20-25%. This is the reason air cars are not practical
Engineair a company making a motor almost the same as existing air motors (see GAST air motor) with similar efficiency and power so they aren't selling but Engineair still looks for more funding.

When? We hear about new inventions all the time, but nothing is available yet.
