Forgive my nervousness in this video, I don't usually make videos, but this was important to me, and the Internet. :D
Text of vid: Hi, I'm Cynthia. There are Two bills before Congress, known as the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House, which would censor the Web and impose harmful regulations on American business. Millions of Internet users and entrepreneurs already oppose SOPA and PIPA.
The Senate will begin voting on January 24th. Please let them know how you feel by writing a letter, calling, or tweeting about SOPA.
If you are on Twitter, you can go to Twibbion.com or blackoutsopa.org to add a badge to your profile against SOPA, and PIPA.
Today as many as 115 Internet companies went offline to protest SOPA, they did this to protest a bill that is badly written, over broad, a determent to eCommerce industries. You can read the bill on Senate.gov or go to Mashable where they have broken the bill down pretty well.
Wikipedia who also participated in the blackout said that SOPA and PIPA will effect them in many ways. For example, in its current form, SOPA would require Wikipedia to actively monitor every site we link to, to ensure it doesn't host infringing content. Any link to an infringing site could put us in jeopardy of being forced offline. Which is one of the things that makes this bill over the top.
Google says on their page: Fighting online piracy is important. The most effective way to shut down pirate websites is through targeted legislation that cuts off their funding. There's no need to make American social networks, blogs and search engines censor the Internet or undermine the existing laws that have enabled the Web to thrive, creating millions of U.S. Jobs.
Reddit adds, Today, for 12 hours, reddit.com goes dark to raise awareness of two congress: H.R.3261 "Stop Online Piracy Act" and S.968 "PROTECT IP", which could radically change the landscape of the Internet.
These bills provide overly broad mechanisms for enforcement of copyright which would restrict innovation and threaten the existence of websites with user-submitted content, such as reddit.
Anonymous has also stopped tweeting from 8am to 8pm today, they have been at the forefront of the fight, as they are the Internet's cyber army in a sense fighting government atrocitires.
So the Internet and I ask you to: Please take today as a day of focus and action to learn about these destructive bills and do what you can to prevent them from becoming reality.
Too much is at stake -- please vote NO on PIPA and SOPA. Do your part to save the Internet.
Thank you
Cynthia Yildirim
