10 questions to ask yourself before buying a Point of Sale system for your bar by Barry Chandler, MD of ManageYourBar.com

1. How many cash registers/POS systems do I need? Scalability, food, back of house, front of house, site survey
2. Security Levels staff access, management control, no sales, configurable
3. Reporting Requirements which reports daily, weekly, annually, back office, real time reporting
4. Handhelds, cash registers, or both? consider if you will need them, food based business, linked systems
5. Control Levels stock control, linked with beer flow monitors
6. Budget rather than shopping by price, first establish your exact needs and discuss this with various POS companies. They should build a system around your needs. Future growth
7. Wireless systems or connected by wires. Some bars have mobile work stations and food service areas and move cash registers around
8. Installation & training. -
9. Software & Hardware Support. Telephone and on site, paying for different levels
10. Additional element -- CCTV
