Border collie working sheep up close and personal so you can see him using "eye." This guy is a national champion at herding--he really knows what he's doing. The instinct to use eye and have a low body posture is innate in most BCs, but it takes a lot of training to teach a dog to work the sheep the way you want them to--to learn to flank, drive, stay the right distance away, slow down, not "grip," etc. Tux is a pro and it's always an honor to watch him work.

  • He's a border collie. They're bred for herding, and he competed and won on a national scale--he's a retired champion. He belongs to a good friend of mine. I wish I could clone him, he's wonderful!

  • @AZUREGLIDE I'm by no means an expert on the subject, but I've read about herding instincts for the sake of my BC. Some will herd balls, other animals, or sometimes people. It's called "displaced herding behavior" although from what I've read it usually happens with UNtrained BCs. You can actually buy a herding ball if you think it would help her, or if you know someone with a farm it might be good for her to herd every once in a while. If she starts doing it to people, teaching "off" might help

  • Can anyone tell me why my 10 year old collie rescue wants to herd balls in the garden (footballs, tennis balls etc)? She was on a farm herding for 8 years and all she wants to do is herd balls now. Does she substitute balls for sheep? She snaps at them too like herding dogs do to sheep.

  • What a beautiful dog!! My mom has two border collies! Her boy dog named Jerry tries to herd my sister and I. He will stare us down when we are in the kitchen!! lol. They are just the best dogs to own, and super smart!!
