Mrs. Berry is living with a rattlesnake inside of her home. She is afraid to go to bed at night and open any cabinets doors because of the snake. Her home had large holes in the floors. There is only one heater in the entire house.
You know ,one of the saddest things is that they are sure to point out that she has worked, she is medically unable, etc etc. I know that is because she doesn't want to be seen as a "freeloader",and she is very proud, but damn, that makes me sad. Are we so jaded and cold in the US that we won't help anyone who hasn't worked 3 jobs and had two heart attacks? How about just because its the right thing to do, as humans?? Should anyone live this way, in the US, in 2011?
If you visit the Hattiesburg City website the Mayor says:
"As the fourth largest city in the state, the area is nationally recognized as a great place to live for many reasons -- its low unemployment, medical and educational facilities, and exciting business opportunities" . I'm confused. Also the student says he's from the University of Southern Mississippi, not the Unversity of Mississipppi as the credits say.
It's not just about proverty in the South. I can show you the exact same filthy conditions in ghettos of Northern cities. Proverty stinks in all parts of the country.
A heart-rendering story affecting many people in theso-called richest nation.A major contradiction in every sense of the word. Imagine living with a unwanted rattlesnake which could strike at any time.. Most of the poor consist of mostly people of color. It's ironic that this lady puts her faith in a god that doesn't seem to ameliorate suffering, in my opinion.

Shocking and very, very sad. Thank you so very much for exposing this poverty, these people who are Americans and what they face to a wider audience.
