Now, I am willing to accept that the US might use a different classification system, but as a Swede (the weapons country of origin) trained in the use of the weapon it makes me cringe a little every time R Lee Ermey calls it a rocket.

Except it's not a rocket launcher, because it doesn't fire rockets at all. The projectile has no boost stage or solid or liquid fuel motor - it is a /giant 84 millimetre bullet/. The full loaded round is case, propellant, projectile; no motor.

What you described earlier is the very definition of "recoilless rifle" or "recoiless gun". The definition of a rocket launcher is a launcher that fires /rockets/.

It doesn't fire fucking rockets.
