he was so handsome...i remember when i first saw the cabinet of dr. caligari i was mesmerized by this statuesque beautiful man. i don't think anyone could've played the parts he did and make them likable. gwynplaine could've just been a frankstein's monster, a source for terror, but instead he was a child (with his dog) and you really felt for him. why don't we have actors like this today?

HE WAS HOT. but aside from that he always seemed to lend a genuine humanity to his characters that was scarcely executed effectively in the melodrama of silent movies.

Whether or not people know his name, to a hundred million comic book fans, Conrad Veidt lives on.

@Jorzn84 the joker (batman's nemesis) was based off of gwynplain from the man who laughs

His "EYES"!!

A true talent! The inspiration for the Joker!
So tragic that a fatal heart attack took him right as his star was rising in America; after 'The Thief of Baghdad', 'Casablanca' & 'Above Suspicion'.

I read somewhere that such multilations to the face were common among beggers looking for a means to make people feel sorry for them or at least scare people into giving them donations.
on 0.33 he kinda looks like batman's enemy the old guy who runs that worldwide assasin guild... forgot his name... anyway was it also based on that conrad veidt's character? and can u tell me what movie that was? Thnx

I think that's from "The Last Performance". I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with Ras Al Ghoul.
